Robert Jencks November 8, 2011 The Island: Process Essay I found this assignment very challenging at times, but in the end I learned a lot about crafting poetry. The first hurdle I had to overcome was who my letter was going to be written, and after much deliberation, and back and forth I decided on Nelson Mandela. I have always admired his devotion, and his quiet strength that makes everyone around him at peace. His ability to turn the other cheek, and not seek revenge on those that took away his freedom is astounding. He has always sacrificed his own needs for the betterment of his people. I wanted to put a face to an ordinary South African citizen who his sacrifice has directly helped. I chose my persona to be young women, so it would allow me to contrast the elderly and male Mandela. I wanted to use my letter to not only thank Mr. Mandela, but to understand his experiences while at Robben Island. I wanted to be in his cell, eat his food and smell what he smelled. I wanted to totally immerse myself in his everyday life in prison so I co uld fully understand him, and by doing this help to acknowledge the hardships he endured. By doing this I was able to really put myself there alongside Nelson. I was able to vividly see your cell as I imagined it to be which was incredibly helpful in crafting my poem. After my initial struggles choosing a persona I am very happy I chose to take on the role of Riley, and to write to Mr. Mandela. I also enjoyed the creative process that came along with brainstorming possible personas. It enabled me to try on certain skins or identities to see if they fit me. Because the Apartheid government was so evil, and oppressive to black I found it easy to feel the pain that an oppressive government forces on the oppressed. The sacrifice mad by Mr. Mandela made him an incredibly likeable and sympathetic man to identify with and motivated me to do the best possible job in writing about him. After my initial letter was done I broke that letter into lines of 10 to 12 syllables. After I completed this I found that my focus was much too broad and that I needed to focus more closely on one part of his experience. I decided to focus on his cell at Robben Island. I wanted to put myself there alongside him. This exercise helped my overall understanding of poetic form. The more I worked on sounding out stressed and unstressed syllabus the easier it became. Because rhythm is so important in poetry this exercise allowed me to practice this skill. Blank verse is such a flexible type of meter it does not handcuff us like some other forms. It resembles spoken English more than most forms of poetry. However it does give us a framework to build our poem around. It gives us the skeleton of our poem, and gives us a very delightful tempo that is pleasing to the ear. Blank verse also gives us the freedom to not worry about rhyme. So we get the lovely benefit of the tempo without the sing song sound of rhymed iambic pentameter. This is a skill that will most certainly help me in my future poem writing.

Such errors include original entry errors, transposition errors, calculation errors and reversal of entries. An original entry error occurs when an incorrect figure is recorded and posted. A prime instance of this is the ten-key error, where you accidentally hit the number above the correct key. For example, if you enter 7, instead of 4, you would get a difference of 3, 30 or 3,000,000 even. The transposition error occurs when you switch two digits in a number. For example, if you enter 71 as 17 or 428 as 824, you have committed a transposition error. Notice that the difference between the two numbers in a transposition error is always evenly divisible by nine. The result of 71 – 17 is 54 and 824 – 428 is 396. Article 6 of the ECHR builds up a body of principles that relate to fair trial rights in regular courts. Nevertheless, an essential question which applies to both special tribunals and courts still remains whether they operate with sufficient fair trial guarantees. The term ‘due process’ refers to the legal obligation that a state must respect and provide all of the legal rights that are owed to a person.Due process balances the power of law of the land and protects the individuals from it. For example, when a government harms a person without following the exact course of the law, this constitutes a due process violation. The common law is a law developed by judges through decisions of courts and similar tribunals as opposed to statutes adopted through the legislative process issued by the executive bench. I t does contain due process principles as well as other basic human rights but it is to a certain degree. The European Court of Human Right which is located in Strasburg was established by the European Conventions on Human rights.It hears complaints that one of the 47 member state has violated the human rights written in the convention and its rules. Complaints can be brought by an individual or other contracting state and the court can also issue advisory opinion. Article 6 of the European Courts of Human Rights focuses basically on the right to a fair trial. Section 1 of the Article states that â€Å"In the determination of his civil rights and obligations or of any criminal charge against him, everyone is entitled to a fair and public hearing within a reasonable time by an independent and impartial tribunal established by law.Judgment shall be pronounced publicly but the press and public may be excluded from all or part of the trial in the interests of morals, public order or nat ional security in a democratic society, where the interests of juveniles or the protection of the private life of the parties so require, or to the extent strictly necessary in the opinion of the court in special circumstances where publicity would prejudice the interests of justice.. † The Section 2 of the same act states that â€Å"Everyone charged with a criminal offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law.Section 3 explains further that â€Å"Everyone charged with a criminal offence has the following minimum rights: (a) to be informed promptly, in a language which he understands and in detail, of the nature and cause of the accusation against him. (b) to have adequate time and facilities for the preparation of his defence. (c) to defend himself in person or through legal assistance of his own choosing or, if he has not sufficient means to pay for legal assistance, to be given it free when the interests of justice so require. d) to examine or h ave examined witnesses against him and to obtain the attendance and examination of witnesses on his behalf under the same conditions as witnesses against him.(e) to have the free assistance of an interpreter if he cannot understand or speak the language used in court. † The reaction of the common law courts to the European Court of Human Right is seen in the response of two very important cases of H v. Belgium and James v. UK. In H v. Belgium [1987] H was a Belgian citizen who had been struck off the roll of the Antwerp Bar.H has tried unsuccessfully to be reinstated. The court held that there has been a breach of Article 6 by the tribunal that had considered H’s re-admission. The court’s reasoning was based on 2 grounds: firstly, there was no right to challenge the tribunal’s decision. And secondly, the decision was not adequately reasoned. In James v. United Kingdom [1986] the applicants were the trustees of the Duke of Westminster. The estate contained certain properties that had been let to tenants.The tenants had made use of the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 to buy the properties from the estate. The trustees complained that both the compulsory transfer and the prices received for the properties amounted to a breach of, inter alia, their Article 6 rights. The courts held that there had been no breach. The courts argued that: (a)Article 6 does not require that there be a national court with competence to invalidate or override national law. It does not guarantee any particular content for ‘civil rights and obligations’ on the substantive law of contracting states. b)In so far as the applicants considered that there was non-compliance with the leasehold reform legislation they had unimpeded access to a tribunal competent to determine the issue.In cases which determine civil rights and in criminal cases, it protects the right to a public hearing in front of an independent and impartial tribunal within reasonable time, the presumption of innocence and the other minimum rights for those charges in a criminal case such as: adequate time and facilities to prepare their defense, access o legal representation, right to examine witnessed against them to have them examined, right to the free assistance of an interpreter. Mainly most of the Convention violations that the courts find are excessive delays, in the violation of the â€Å"reasonable time† requirement. Another significant set of violations concerns the â€Å"confrontational clause† of Article 6 which protects the right to examine witnessed or have them examined. In this aspect, problems of compliance with Article 6 may arise when national laws allow the use in evidence of the testimonies of absent, anonymous and vulnerable witnesses.The response of the English courts to the Article 6 of ECHR was seen in the case of Fayed v. United Kingdom [1994] where the court argued that, â€Å"A fair balance had to be struck between the demands of the general interest of the community and the requirements of the protection of the individual’s fundamental rights. It’s not always easy to trace the dividing line between procedural and substantive limitations of a given entitlement of a domestic law. And in the case of Osman v United Kingdom [2000] allegations were raised about the alleged failure of the police to protect right to life and lawfulness of restrictions on right of access to a court. The appellants argued that thru k government had deprived them of a right of action in negligence against the police. The ECHR found that the appellants had been deprived of the right of access to the court. The ECHR went on to argue that Article 6(1) embodies the ‘right to a court’, of which the right of access, or the right to institute proceedings before a court in civil matters.The Article 6 of the ECHR is merely provided for thinking deeply about the rights to a fair trial more seriously as it could be ea sily breached by the courts. If it had been kept as a common law, the full rights of the individuals to an independent and impartial tribunal would have been not granted. And as a result of that, many individuals who have been accused of a crime would have been falsely imprisoned on the basis of not enough representation or unjust representation.

Snack #1: Nuts Nuts are great snacks because they’re high in protein and healthy fat, low in carb.They are very satisfying and will help boost brain function.Choose any nut you like: almonds, cashews, walnuts, macadamia nuts, etc. I'd recommend you try to stick to just plain nuts or nuts and dried fruit trail mixesrather than trail mixes that add in chocolate or candies.The candies and sugar could cause that unwanted crash and lead to fatigue. Go nuts for nuts! Snack #2: Jerky Jerky is a super easy to transport snack that's packed with protein to fuel you. Any type of jerky will do: beef, pork, turkey, salmon, etc. Pick whatever type you like best! Snack #3: Carrots or Celery Sticks and Nut Butter Veggies and nut butter can be a more enjoyable way to eat nuts (for the picky eaters of the world like me!).While I hate raw nuts, I love nut butters.Nut butters have the same great healthy fats and proteins to boost that brain function and keep you satiated. Anut butter that is natural (just nuts and maybe salt)is preferable to one with added sugar and/or corn syrup, but if you can only find the latter, that's fine. Snack #4: VeggieChips/Corn Chips and Guacamole Guacamole is a great source of omega 3s.You can buy single serving packs of guacamole by Sabra or Wholly Guacamole at your local Target, Walmart, or another grocery store. I'd recommend eating it with corn or veggie chips over potato chips for a slightly healthier option, but potato chips are okay. This is a good snack for those with allergies since you can avoid nuts, dairy, and eggs with this tasty and healthy snack. Guac for days. Snack #5: Cheese This is a great choice for picky eaters; seriously, who doesn't like cheese? I'd recommend an easy to eat/transport option such as string cheese and/or Babybel. Cheese is packed with fat and protein tosatisfy your food cravings and give you brain power to ace the test. Snack #6: Carrots or Celery Sticks and Hummus This is another good choice for those with allergies because you can avoid dairy, eggs, wheat, and nuts.It’s a really tasty and filling snack.It’s more protein than fat, which is fine. However, I’d probably recommend you only eat this for one of your three snacks as it’s not as filling as some of the other snacks listed on this list.Choose a higher fat packed snack such as the veggiechips and guac as your other snack to keep a good balance of proteins and fat. Snack #7: Dried Fruit Dried fruits are packed with nutrients to give you a boost during the SAT. Try topickdried fruit with no added sugar.If you can only find dried fruit with added sugar, I'd recommend mixing them with nuts to create a trail mix that offsets that sugar with healthy fat and protein. If you don't mix the dried fruit with nuts,I’d probably recommend you only eat dried fruit for one of your three snacks;it’s not as satiating as some of the other snacks listed on this list.Choose a fat and proteinpacked snack such as the veggie sticks and nut butteras your other snack. Snack #8: Apple or Banana and Nut Butter This snack is another great way to eat nuts if you’re a picky eater.Just as I said in the veggie and nut butter section, try to opt for a naturalnut butter over the processed ones with sugar and/or corn syrup. Snack #9:Fruit and Nut Bars I love these kinds of bars, and as a very picky eater, I can be hard to impress. I'd recommend KIND or Larabars because these bars contain very few ingredients and only natural ingredients.They’re made primarily with dried fruit and nuts, so they’re packed with healthy fats and nutrients. I’d recommend choosing one of the bars without chocolatesince you don’t need any added sugar. I’d also suggest you only use this for one of your snacks since the dried fruit add some sugar (albeit natural sugar).Offset it with other snacks that are protein and/or fat packed such as stringcheese. Snack #10: Seeds Seeds are packed with fats to keep you focused during your test. Any seeds will work: pumpkin seeds (aka pepitas), flax seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.You can also mix seeds with nuts to make a yummy and healthy trail mix.This is an easy to make and easy to transport snack that’ll keep you full and focused. Snack #11: Water While water may not be exactly a snack, I felt it was crucial to have on this list.If you get dehydrated on test day, you can lose focus and potentially end up with a worse score.Bring one bottle of water in addition to your three snacks. While your test center may have a water fountain, you don’t want to rely on that, and you also don’t want to be waiting in line throughout your whole break to use the water fountain. However, avoid drinking too much water because you don’t want to get the urge to pee in the middle of your test.I’d recommend splitting the one bottle of water into three portions (you don’t literally have to split it, but imagine it).Consume at most one portion each break. Water: the cool kid's drink. SAT Snacks To Avoid While you don’t necessarily have to eat one of the snacks on this list, you at least need to avoid sugar-filled or corn syrup filled snacks such as candy.You should also avoid simple carbs such as potato chips.These kinds of snacks are not filling and not nutritious. You'll just end up craving more food after eating these types of snacks. Also, avoid coffee.If you’ve never had coffee before, don’t try it on the day of your SAT.If you’re a regular coffee drinker, limit yourself to one cup.Too much coffee will make you jittery and then will cause a steep crash.If you feel the need for more caffeine, opt for green tea! Tips for Test Day Success To ensure you walk into your test center feeling calm and ready, you want to follow our three steps for test day success. Step #1: Pack all of your belongings the night before so that you're not scrambling the morning of the test. Pack your SAT admissions ticket, picture ID, calculator, extra batteries, pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, watch, snacks (if non-perishable) and water bottle. Step #2: Go to bed early.Make sure you get eight hours of sleep so that you feel well rested. Wake up at least an hour before you need to leave for your test center. This way you'll feel awake by the time you get to the test center. Step #3: Eat a goodbreakfast in the morning.Eggs, greek yogurt, and oatmeal are all great options for breakfast.
